The SA Schools Adventure Racing body was formed as a non-profit organization to promote adventure racing at school level. Schools Adventure Racing is a team sport where the team consists of four members where at least one should be of the opposite sex. An adventure race consist of different legs that could be made up of hiking, running, kloofing, river crossings, mountain biking, canoeing, swimming, rope work (eg, abseiling & raft building), rock climbing,  orienteering, special obstacles and tasks that could include environmental assistance to the local community or area where the event take place. The teams have to use navigation skills to find check points (PC’s) with a 1:50 000 scaled map and compass whilst doing any of the aforementioned activities. SA Schools AR Championships have three age categories namely Under 13, U/15 and U/19. SA Schools Adventure Racing attracts teams from all provinces. Due to popularity and organizing constraints the Schools AR is normally limited to 50 teams of 4 participants. At school level the races vary between 30 and 70 km depending on the difficulty level of the terrain and activities. Normally a race would start early morning and finish mid to late afternoon which makes it a serious endurance event for school children.
